At the start of this year, a coalition of over 100 national and local organizations—led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Bipartisan Policy Center—launched the “Build by the Fourth of July” coalition to urge Congress and the Biden administration to craft and pass a fiscally and environmentally responsible infrastructure package by the Fourth of July, 2021.
The ranks of the ”Build by the Fourth of July” coalition grew to more than 300 groups—a diverse alliance including the North America’s Building Trades Unions, leading environmental advocacy organizations, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, as well as other leading business, policy and labor organizations.
We called for a durable commitment and clear strategy from lawmakers on a legislative package which will:
- Repair and update our crumbling infrastructure
- Stimulate our economy and create middle-class sustaining jobs
- Address climate change
- Promote fiscally and environmentally responsible policies
- Improve federal project approvals
- Address the digital divide
We congratulate the bipartisan group of 22 senators and the Biden administration on reaching an agreement, and the Problem Solvers Caucus for endorsing the agreement, to invest $1.2 trillion—including $579 billion in new spending—on American infrastructure. With its significant and well-targeted investments in surface transportation, transforming electric vehicle infrastructure, expanding access and improving affordability of broadband internet and more, the bipartisan framework is consistent with the goals put forth in January by the “Build by the Fourth of July”’ coalition.
We urge lawmakers of both parties to act quickly to advance this generational investment in American infrastructure. Doing so will set the foundation for a robust, broad economic recovery—and help restore and strengthen trust in American democracy.
Sincerely,
U.S. Chamber of Commerce
