WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions is holding a hearing about how the employer system is best positioned to address the challenge of high medical costs. The hearing is titled, Lowering Costs and Increasing Access to Health Care with Employer-Driven Innovation, and will feature testimony from employers who are adapting and using tools to both hold down costs and promote a healthy workforce. Protecting Americans’ Coverage Together (PACT), a coalition of employer voices dedicated to strengthening the employer sponsored insurance (ESI) system, has been championing this kind of market-driven innovation. In advance of the hearing, Katie Mahoney, Vice President of Health Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, made the following statement:
“A healthy workforce is good for employers and employees alike. That’s one reason employers are increasingly developing tools and programs to keep their employees healthy as well as deploying new strategies to hold down costs. One of the significant benefits of the employer system is the ability to adapt to evolving worker needs and better align incentives to drive value in health care. While some would like to tear down what is working for tens of millions of Americans, employers remain committed to the ESI system because they know that it is best positioned to innovate, respond to employee needs, and hold down costs for workers. This hearing will add important context to the debate about the future of health care in America, and we commend Chairman Good for convening it.”
