“We can’t take a blunt approach on China—like decoupling. We need to take the surgical approach of de-risking.”

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne Clark delivered a strong message on Wednesday to business leaders, public officials, and policy experts on the final day of the Chamber’s 13th annual China Business Conference, a premier forum focused on economic and political relationships.

Her speech came amid China’s raids on western due diligence and consulting firms and as the Chamber has continued to urge the administration to get bolder on trade and strengthen agreements with other countries – and with China, in ways that don’t put national security at risk.

“Make no mistake, national security must come first,” Clark said, “but it doesn’t have to come at the expense of our economic future.”
