WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Brazil-U.S. Business Council (BUSBC) and the International Policy Coalition for Sustainable Growth welcome Brazil’s new climate commitments to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2030, to end illegal deforestation by 2028, as well as to officially update its Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We also applaud Brazil’s leadership as a co-sponsor of the global methane pledge to curb emissions as announced at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). Commenting from Glasgow where the Chamber attends COP26, Gary Litman, Senior Vice President of Global Initiatives stated: “these actions will serve Brazil well in attracting sustainable investment, including in the Amazon region, and building a sustainable, inclusive future. Brazil is an agriculture powerhouse and a leader in innovative solutions for land use and biodiversity conversation. We believe Brazil’s economy will benefit directly from its commitment to innovation-based green transition.”
The Chamber believes that Brazil plays an important role in shaping global environmental goals and advancing the climate agenda. “We have long supported Brazil’s efforts on climate consistent with the country’s unique natural capital and have urged the Brazilian government to act on its pledges. The U.S. business community sees great nature-based economic opportunities for building a vibrant bioeconomy in Brazil’s rich biomes,” said Cassia Carvalho, Executive Director, BUSBC. “With this important milestone, we stand ready to support Brazil’s efforts in defining a roadmap and viable strategies to achieve these commitments and be on the right path towards sustainable development.”
