WASHINGTON, D.C.— The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-Pakistan Business Council (USPBC) hosted newly elected Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi today for a roundtable discussion with business executives on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
Tami Overby, U.S. Chamber senior vice president for Asia, welcomed Prime Minister Abbasi and expressed the commitment of American businesses to continuing a solid economic engagement between the two countries.
“The U.S. Chamber appreciates the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Abbasi so soon after his election. We look forward to working with both governments to advance this bilateral economic engagement as part of the broader strategic goals of the U.S. in Pakistan and the region,” said Overby. “As business partners, American companies support a broad-based bilateral relationship with Pakistan that promotes stronger collaboration in the areas of trade and investment, which can help trigger more interest from U.S. businesses and jobs here at home.”
“Over the last fifteen years, the USPBC has led efforts to improve the U.S.-Pakistan commercial relationship, and increase understanding of the country’s huge potential as a commercial destination and the reasons our companies have strong interest in the Pakistani market.” said Dr. Mehmood Khan, chairman of the USPBC and vice chairman of PepsiCo. “Continued implementation of sound policies and necessary structural and financial reforms will help boost business confidence and expand job creation, economic growth, and innovation in both countries.”
