The U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee on January 18 approved four nominees to the Department of Labor, clearing the way for their consideration by the full Senate. The nominees included Patrick Pizzella as Deputy Secretary, Cheryl Stanton as Wage and Hour Division administrator, Scott Mugno as assistant secretary for Occupational Safety and Health, and William Beach as commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The HELP Committee had previously approved the four nominees in 2017, but the full Senate did not take up the nominations by the end of the year. With the start of a new session of Congress at the beginning of January, Senate rules required the president to re-nominate the candidates and the nominees to be re-approved by the committee.
With the one-year anniversary of the administration occurring on January 20, Senate confirmation of these appointees and that of John F. Ring to the National Labor Relations Board would be welcome news.
