TO THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS:
The Chamber strongly supports S. 1358 / H.R. 2839, the “Bipartisan Border Solutions Act of 2021.” Members of Congress who cosponsor this bill will receive credit for the Leadership component of their “How They Voted” rating.
The sharp increase in the number of individuals crossing the southern border and the severe overcrowding at border facilities present a set of circumstances that Congress cannot ignore. Government needs to address this pressing situation, and the only way that meaningful policy changes will be enacted is if Republicans and Democrats work together to achieve results.
The Bipartisan Border Solutions Act of 2021 would enact several commonsense measures to deal with the current influx of arrivals on America’s southwestern border. These include expanding the number of border processing facilities, hiring additional agency personnel to increase DHS’s processing capacity, expediting the asylum adjudication process, and improving the level of care that the federal government provides unaccompanied children. These types of provisions are not only necessary to confront the ongoing border crisis, but they also need to be considered by Congress as they debate other immigration issues where reform is desperately needed.
The Chamber commends Senators John Cornyn and Kyrsten Sinema and Representatives Henry Cuellar and Tony Gonzales for their leadership on this important legislation. We look forward to working with the House and Senate to ensure the Bipartisan Border Solutions Act is signed into law.
