Dear Chairman Grassley and Ranking Member Wyden:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports the nomination of Janet Yellen for Secretary of the Treasury and commends the Committee for scheduling the January 19 confirmation hearing.
Dr. Yellen has a distinguished career as an economist and as a public servant and has garnered the respect of a myriad of stakeholders across the political spectrum. This experience should help her effectively implement Treasury’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Yellen served as Chair of the Federal Reserve System from 2014 to 2018. Prior to her tenure as Chair, the first woman to hold this role, she served as Chair of Council of Economic Advisers, was president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and served as a Governor of the Federal Reserve Board. This experience renders her uniquely capable to lead the Treasury during America’s economic recovery.
Dr. Yellen has demonstrated she values a diversity of perspectives to inform policy decisions. We expect that she will weigh the views of different stakeholders via an analytical framework and cost-benefit assessment, as the public should expect from an economist.
The Chamber supports the nomination of Janet Yellen to serve as Secretary of the Treasury. We believe her leadership will be a positive contribution to America’s economic recovery.
Sincerely,
Suzanne P. Clark
