Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Technology Engagement Center (C_TEC) yesterday submitted comments to the Department of Commerce’s (DoC) National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) calling on the DoC to support the Developing Innovation and Growing the Internet of Things (DIGIT) Act in Congress, a bill that would ensure that stakeholders are engaged with the government on issues surrounding the internet of things (IoT). The comments also warn the NTIA against creating new regulations that would inhibit IoT development.
“Every day we see more and more life changing benefits of the internet of things, from health care and wellness to energy and the environment,” said Tim Day, senior vice president of C_TEC. “In order for innovation to thrive, we must create an environment where industry can have a seat at the same table as regulators and policy makers to ensure that all voices are heard and taken into account before action is taken. The DIGIT Act does just that, and C_TEC strongly urges its passage in Congress. It is our hope that the Commerce Department will continue its policy of working with all stakeholders as it continues to navigate these new technologies.”
C_TEC encourages DoC to advance IoT through:
- Promoting data–driven decisions and consistent, broad definitions that recognize the diversity of IoT;
- Promoting global, voluntary and open industry-led standards, supporting interoperability and the free flow of information;
- Promoting security through partnerships, education, and reduction of liability risk; and
- Removing barriers to infrastructure deployment and avoiding regulation and fragmentation.
In its comments, C_TEC writes: “NTIA can contribute to the future of IoT by coordinating government activity and insisting on data-driven decision making.
